I’ve just been watching a great programme about the Roman Republic and Empire;
“Ancient Rome: The Rise & Fall of an Empire”
BBC Worldwide Ltd
Caesar’s soldiers were convinced by their great General Caesar that they and Rome would be better off led by him than the boring and allegedly-corrupt Tribunes of the Roman Republic, so they started a civil war in which thousands of Romans died. Within four years of his taking over, Caesar was assassinated and they got the lunatic NERO, the first of a long line of often murderous Emperors.
“La Comedie Humaine” is both tragic and funny,
and of course it recalls that wonderful English proverb:
“Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t.”
“Out of the frying-pan into the fire.”
But, GOOD LUCK TO ALL MY FRENCH FRIENDS!!
